The highest-grossing Chinese domestic film of 2003, Cell Phone tapped into deep-seated issues about the effects of technology and modern life upon traditional intimacy. Written by Liu Zhen, adapted from his novel by the same title, the film depicts two successful businessmen (one a TV host, the other a TV producer) whose family lives are disrupted by the record of their affairs found on their cellphones. Set in modern-day downtown Beijing, the film’s huge success has been partially due to its willingness to deal with the potentially disastrous effects of rapid technological growth.
