A seminal work in the history of Chinese Cinema, Crows and Sparrows vividly depicts the conflicts inherent in urban life on the eve of the Communist victory during the end of the Guomindang rule. A deceptively simple story of tenants banding together against a corrupt landlord in Shanghai, the film presents the misunderstandings among the characters in a humane and oftentimes lighthearted way, while preserving the gravity of the political situation. Only released after the Chinese Civil War ended, the film was actually produced as Chiang Kai-Shek’s government was falling but released on the first New Year of the PRC and gives an unparalleled view of the transition.
