Peter Highman (Robert Downey, Jr.) is heading home to Los Angeles, where his wife, Sarah, is going to give birth to their child, when he accidentally switches bags with another man. The man, Ethan Tremblay (Zach Galifianakis) he switched the bag with, is also on the same plane as he is. Peter is questioned by security and eventually is put on the no-fly list. Ethan finds him while driving a car and offers him a ride. On the road they stop at a motel to get a room, but are forced to sleep in the car as they don’t have enough money for the room. The next day, while Ethan is out, Peter leaves him and drives off. As he realizes that the ashes of Ethan’s father are still in the car, he decides to go back. Peter gets some rest in the car while Ethan drives. But Ethan fall asleep and they crash and fall over to the interstate.
