Notable for the stunning direction and beautiful staging by Hou Yong (himself a well-known cinematographer), Jasmine Women tells the story of three generations of Chinese women in Shanghai. Mo, from the 1930s, Li, from the 1950s, and Hua, from the 1980s must all confront love, sex, and family at different periods in history, with different social mores dictating the proper way to behave and, to a certain extent, the mistakes that they must make. Although the film is stolen by the performances of the three female leads, the supporting cast also excels. An unflinching look at the spiritual and emotional lives of women, Jasmine Women succeeds in making the personal political - and vice-versa - for a contemporary public.
