Telling the story of Zhou Jun, a young Chinese-American girl visiting her father’s homeland, and Geng Hua, a student studying for his college entrance exams, the film explores the deep-rooted political rivalries present in China during the 1970s and ‘80s. Although the lovers’ fathers are old acquaintances, they have since diverged politically and reject the marriage; however, the film depicts their journey working through their rivalries for the sake of their families. Romance on Lushan Mountain is remarkable not only for its new take on the archetypal Romeo-and-Juliet myth, but also for the fact that it holds the Guinness World Record for the Longest First-Run of a Film in One Cinema; it has been continuously running at the Jiangxi Movie Circulation and Screening Company in Lushan, China since July 12, 1980.
