หนังไซไฟสุดดังแห่งปี “Avatar” และหนังสงครามอีรัก “The Hurt Locker” กลายเป็นภาพยนตร์สองเรื่องที่ได้เข้าชิงรางวัลมากที่สุด ในรางวัลออสการ์ครั้งที่ 82
       
ออสการ์ครั้งที่ 82 ยังเป็นปีแรกที่จะมีผู้ถูกเสนอชื่อเข้าชิงรางวัลภาพยนตร์ยอดเยี่ยมถึง 10 เรื่อง จากเดิมที่มีแค่ 5
       
นอกจาก Avatar และ The Hurt Locker หนังที่ชิงชัยในรางวัลใหญ่ที่สุดของงานได้แก่ หนังไซไฟขายไอเดีย District 9 อนิเมชั่นขวัญใจนักวิจารณ์ Up หนังสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 Inglourious Basterds หนังที่สร้างมาจากเรื่องจริงของนักอเมริกันฟุตบอลชื่อดัง The Blind Side, ผลงานของ จอร์จ คูลนีย์ Up in the Air งานดราม่าเล่าเรื่องยุค 60 A Serious Man หนังที่เล่าเรื่องชีวิตและการเติบโตของหญิงสาวชาวอังกฤษ An Education" และ Precious: Based on the Novel `Push' By Sapphire หนังที่เล่าเรื่องชีวิตอันลำเค็ญของชาวอเมริกันผิวดำ
       
โดย Avatar และ The Hurt Locker เข้าชิงรางวัลทั้งหมดใน 9 สาขา Inglourious Basterds 8 สาขา, Precious, Up in the Air 6 สาขา และ Up เข้าชิงรางวัล 5 สาขา ทั้งอนิเมชั่นขนาดยาวยอดเยี่ยม และเป็นอนิเมชั่น ที่สามารถเข้าชิงในสาขาภาพยนตร์ยอดเยี่ยมเรื่องแรกนับแต่ The Beauty and The Beast เมื่อหลายปีก่อน
       
สาขาด้านการแสดงบรรดาตัวเต็ง ต่างสามารถผ่านเข้ารอบกลายเป็นผู้ถูกเสนอเข้าชิงในรอบสุดท้ายกันได้ถ้วนหน้า ทั้งในสาขานักแสดงนำ ซานดร้า บูลล็อก จาก The Blind Side, เจฟฟ์ บริดเจส จากหนังเกี่ยวกับวงการเพลงคันทรีย์ Crazy Heart ส่วนสาขานักแสดงสมทบสองตัวเต็งที่กวาดมาแทบทุกเวทีอย่าง โมนีค จาก Preciousและนักแสดงชาวออสเตรีย คริสโตเฟอร์ วอล์ทซ์ ดาวเด่นในหนังนาซี Inglourious Basterds ก็เป็นผู้ถูกเสนอชื่อไปตามความคาดหมาย
       
ในสาขาใหญ่อย่าง ภาพยนตร์ยอดเยี่ยม และผู้กำกับยอดเยี่ยม เป็นการปะทะกันของอดีตคู่สามีภรรยา ที่โด่งดังที่สุดในรอบปีที่ผ่านมา และกวาดรางวัลก่อนหน้าไปนอนกอดคนละหลายรางวัล Avatar ของ เจมส์ คาเมรอน ชนะรางวัลภาพยนตร์ยอดเยี่ยม และผู้กำกับยอดเยี่ยมที่ลูกโลกทองคำ ส่วน The Hurt Locker ของ แคทเธอรีน บิเกโลว์ สามารถคว้ารางวัลของสมาคมผู้กำกับแห่งอเมริกา ซึ่งเป็นรางวัลที่มักจะสอดคล้องกับออสการ์ The Hurt Locker ยังคว้ารางวัลของ สมาคมผู้อำนวยการสร้าง และถูกเรื่องให้เป็นหนังยอดเยี่ยมแห่งปี 2009 โดยนักวิจารณ์ชั้นนำมากมาย
       
แคทเธอรีน บิเกโลว์ เป็นเจ้าของงานอย่าง Point Break และ K19: The Widowmaker ตอนนี้เธอกลายเป็นผู้กำกับหญิงคนที่ 4 เท่านั้นที่สามารถเข้าชิงรางวัลผู้กำกับยอดเยี่ยมได้ ต่อจาก โซเฟีย คอปโปลาจาก Lost in Translation, เจน แคมเปียน จาก The Piano และลีน่า เวิร์ธมูลเลอร์ จาก Seven Beauties เมื่อปี 1975 ซึ่งไม่เคยมีใครได้รับรางวัลนี้มาก่อนเลย อย่างไรก็ตาม แคทเธอรีน บิเกโลว์ ก็เป็นสตรีคนแรกที่คว้ารางวัลผู้กำกับยอดเยี่ยมของสมาคมผู้กำกับมาได้ เพราะฉะนั้นโอกาสในการเป็นผู้ชนะบนเวทีออสการ์ของเธอ จึงไม่ใช่เรื่องเป็นไปไม่ได้
       
ส่วน ลี เดเนียลส์ ผู้กำกับหนัง Precious เป็นคนผิวดำคนที่สองที่ได้เข้าชิงรางวัลผู้กำกับยอดเยี่ยมต่อจาก จอห์น ซิงเกิลตัน ในปี 1991 ส่วนสองคนทำหนัง เจสัน ไรต์แมน และควินตัน ตารันติโน่ นอกจากจะเข้าชิงในสาขาผู้กำกับยอดเยี่ยมแล้ว ทั้งคู่ยังมีลุ้นในรางวัลด้านการเขียนบทภาพยนตร์ด้วย
       
โดยงานมอบรางวัลจะจัดขึ้นในวันที่ 7 มีนาคม 2010 ที่ โกดัก เธียเตอร์ ในนครลอสแองเจลิส รัฐแคลิฟอร์เนีย โดยมี สตีฟ มาร์ติน และอเล็ค บอลด์วิน ร่วมกันเป็นพิธีกรในงาน
