เมื่อครอบครัว Lewis ได้ของขวัญเป็นกล่อง 1 ใบ ที่ตั้งเอาไว้ที่หน้าประตูบ้าน พร้อมจดหมายที่บอกว่าจะติดต่อมาอีกครั้ง และแล้วก็มีบุรุษลึกลับ (แฟรงค์ แลนเจลล่า) ที่มีแผลเป็นอันน่ากลัวบนใบหน้า มายื่นข้อเสนอเป็นเงิน 1 ล้านเหรียญสหรัฐ แต่ต้องแลกกับ 1 ชีวิตที่ไม่รู้จักที่จะต้องตาย โดยที่ทั้งคู่แค่กดปุ่มสีแดงบนกล่อง นับตั้งแต่วินาทีนั้นชีวิตของ Norma (คาเมรอน ดิแอซ) และ Arthur (เจมส์ มาร์สเด็น) ตกอยู่ในความตายที่วนเวียนตามติดไปทุกที่ ปริศนาที่ชักนำมัจจุราชได้คืบคลานเข้ามาใกล้จนประชิดติดลมหายใจ
